A threnody is a song or hymn of mourning composed or performed as a memorial to a dead person (synonyms include dirge, coronach, lament, and elegy). The term originates from the Greek word threnoidia, from threnos (lament) + oide (song). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European root wed- (to speak) that's also the forefather of such words as ode, tragedy, comedy, parody, melody, and rhapsody.
One recent example of a threnody is Krzysztof Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima; a classic jazz threnody is I Remember Clifford, written to honour the memory of Clifford Brown.

Threnody is a dutch rock band founded in 1989 which released two demo tapes "Ode to the Lamented" (1990) and "Profanation" (1992) before signing a deal with Massacre Records. Started as a death metal band ("As the heavens fall", 1993) they slowly evolved to a more rock sound on their latest album "Control" which was released in 2005. Most popular album of this "thinking man's death metal band" was "Bewildering Thoughts" (1995) which gave them a shared first place in the "best band of Holland" compition in 1995 and was released in Europe, Russia and Japan. The third album self-titled "Threnody" featured members Menno Gootjes (Focus, Ninevolt) and Ernst van Ee (Helloise, Highway Chile, Lana Lane). The music of the opening credits of the movie, though in no way reminiscent of an actual threnody, is entitled "Threnody in X.".
